Contest Winner
When you've got a good thing, you keep going! Moranne C. already won a school contest with this painting, and has now won the final art contest of the year at Flip Side Fairy Tales.
This painting is notable for its lyrical style, the blending of archetypal and modern imagery, along with the vivid colors. Painstaking care in details as small as the hummingbirds, the feathers of the wings, the shadows on the grass, and the castle masonry show impressive control and artistry.
Great job Moranne!

Contest Winner -- 500 Brilliant Words -- CONGRATS!
Snakes and Smiles Forever
By Lisa F
Phoenix, AZ
The kingdom had never been in a happier time. It was well-known that the
Prince would leave the castle to go fishing every day. He’d always had an
interest with the ocean and people had imagined he’d probably continue to do
this hobby, but they never expected it to be how he found the girl he was to marry.
The Prince searched for the woman, but no girl that he’d come across had
her looks or voice. But, one day when he was playing with his dog, Max, he came
across a beautiful maiden. He was sure this was her, the girl who’d saved him.
That changed when he discovered she couldn’t speak, so she couldn’t be the girl
with the wondrous voice who saved him. But, he took her in and soon fell in love
with her, the bright and kind Ariel. Prince Eric believed it started the first
time he’d seen her, but he only realized it after a…peculiar incident.
It was the second day of Ariel’s staying at the castle and Prince Eric
had took her up to see an old friend of his. When they made it, there working
on a metal structure was Gregory, the kingdom’s inventor. Hearing them, Gregory
turned and smiled, he’d heard about the girl who the prince had brought home.
“Hello Prince Eric, what brings you here?” He questioned.
“I was wondering if you could show us your inventions.” He stated.
“Of course Prince!” He exclaimed, “Right this way.”
The next hour they learned about the many inventions. Ariel was ecstatic
to learn so many things and was surprised when a lot of the things Scuttle had
told her turned out to be wrong. As Gregory was showing them a new version of
the carriage, Ariel’s attention focused on a small cylinder metal container.
Seeing if Gregory was busy(he was) she walked over and picked it up. It was
closed and didn’t seem extraordinary. Taking one last look at Prince Eric and
Gregory, she pulled the lid off, getting the shock of her life. As the lid came
off about two dozen little scraggly things popped out, some hitting Ariel in
the face while others just served to scare her.
Scrambling back, she tripped and fell to the floor. Hearing the noise,
Gregory and Prince Eric turned to see what had happened. After a second of
staring, the two burst out laughing at the expression of horror on Ariel’s face
as she breathed heavily.
“I see you found Gregory’s joke can.” Eric said in amusement, walking
over to her.
Now calm, Ariel blushed lightly.
Smiling, Eric helped her up.
“It is a thing I invented for prankster like myself. I put some small
snake dolls in a spring-loaded cup so when it opens, it scares the person.” He
stated, grinning. Ariel stared before she started to silently laugh. As Eric
stared at Ariel, he realized that he loved her and this was the girl that he
would marry.

June's FREE Story
Everyone tells lies. Iris, the Princess of Everland, is the only person in the world who knows for sure when someone's lying, because she can see it in the air around them. She has to assume that's why she always ends courtships with a broken heart and a headache. Iris gets into the habit of wearing a mask to hide her eyes from people's lies -- but she also wears it because she's cross-eyed. It doesn't help to have it. As soon as she takes off the mask, each prince races away from her faster than you can say, "Happily never after." Nobody wants to marry a cross-eyed princess. At least, that's what she thinks . . until one day, a mysterious prince comes to Everland. He never takes off his armor. Baldric and Iris fall in love, but both of them are afraid to show their faces. Will the helmeted prince and the masked princess ever live happily ever after? Only with good timing and an encounter with a dragon.

He's sad to be so smelly; discouraged to be so dumb; and miserable to be mocked by his brothers. Even a good-looking, hard-working guy can hope for a chance in life, can't he? Not Todd. It seems like his brothers have so many of their own plans, he'll always be doing their chores, and helping them achieve their dreams. To make matters worse, the family keeps losing their crops in a single night each summer. Who can figure it all out? Todd finds a key. He tames a huge horse. He visits a mysterious kingdom. Best of all, Todd makes friends with the most beautiful princess in the world. Todd changes everyone's fortunes with nothing but hard work, a cheerful attitude -- and, oh yes, more regular baths.

March Flip Side Party
The read aloud story was Is That All? (coming in June 2013.) That's why there are feather masks in the picture. Only 2 girls wanted to color the dragon with the masked princess and her knight in shining armor (which he never takes off.) It made things easy for the judges of that coloring contest.
Many girls preferred to color the cover of Saved. Awesome work. Plus, these are really wonderful people.
Both of the coloring contest winners will be getting their prizes this week. Congratulations!

What an awesome mermaid!
This artist is an adult. Victoria Williams likes to spend time on artwork every Thursday. She entered two mermaid pictures in the contest, and both were wonderful. The judges chose this one because of the sinuous lines and the awesome colors.
Thanks to anyone who entered this contest. Next big contest deadline is May 31. Click here for rules.

For anyone who has read the stories Saved, and Smell of Victory, you may have put together that only swamp ogres have greenish skin. The mountain ogres were more brown or grey in color so they can blend with rocks. The ogre who gave Cinderella and Edward got a ride through the forest was a mountain ogre with brownish hands. In the story, Cinderella wore a green dress, but maybe the text should change. What do you think? One more big question: why do so many people think Cinderella had blond hair?
The people who made comments on the pictures said they liked how #2 made fun additions like flowers, clouds and sun. The outlining was also a big hit. Congratulations, Sophie!

March's FREE Story
A girl with three horrible traits can live happily ever
after. Three, yes. Not four, though. First, Imogene has the most famous parents in the
world: Cinderella and Prince
Edward. Second, she has obnoxious brothers. Third, she plays bassoon. Fourth, her nickname is “Icky.” The first three things can’t change. So she comes up with a plan to change her
name and change her fate. Even though it's against the rules, she's going to make a wish. Living in a
family where wishes come true in unpredictable ways, Imogene knows she must phrase it carefully.
Will she make a success out of a coronation day that suddenly runs out of control
with too many animals, a silent king, and incensed brothers?

Feburary's FREE story is Flip Side Fairy Tale #2: Smell of Victory.
Getting kidnapped by ogre children really ruins Cinderella and Prince Edward's anniversary. When a stray wish attaches a large sausage to Cinderella's nose, and the royal family has to stop a war between ogre clans, they both wish that wishes had never been invented. If any royal couple can get over their own quarrels and stop a war at the same time, it's this one, though. Can all their problems work themselves out with the right combination of perfume, a kite, a shadow, and the stroke of midnight? Will Cinderella and her prince ever make it home to their little children? Only if they're "saved by the smell."
